Safety in equestrian sports: VITA SAFETY LINE

06/11/2024

Safety in equestrian sports: the importance of an EN-certified airbag

In equestrian sports, safety must always come first, and just as helmets have become an essential component for rider protection, so too have vests, back protectors and airbags. The VEREDUS VITA SAFETY LINE devices, VITA VEST and VITA JACKET, offer exceptional safety thanks to their double protection. But what makes VEREDUS airbags so effective? And why is it important to choose protections certified according to the strictest European standards?

The double protection of VITA VEST and VITA JACKET: innovation and safety
Riding airbags, such as those integrated into the VITA VEST and VITA JACKET, are designed to protect the rider in the event of a fall or impact. Unlike many other products, the airbags in the VITA SAFETY LINE from VEREDUS also protect the spine, leaving no area of the back uncovered. These devices activate in just 80 milliseconds, creating an air cushion that absorbs the energy of the impact, thus reducing the risk of serious injury.

However, the safety offered by VEREDUS devices is not limited to the airbag: thanks to the presence of a Level 2 certified ATP40 back protector, the VITA VEST and VITA JACKET offer an even more effective double protection. The combination of EN-certified airbag and back protector represents one of the most advanced levels of safety available today for equestrian sports.

EN certifications: a guarantee of quality and safety
Certifications are essential to ensure that a device has been tested and approved according to strict standards. VITA VEST and VITA JACKET comply with two EN standards, specifically:
  • EN 1621/4:2013: The strictest airbag standard, originally developed for motorcycle use, ensures that the airbag provides optimal protection in case of impact.
  • EN 1621/2:2014: This standard concerns the back protector, certified at level 2, which offers high protection for the rider's back.
These standards are set by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), which works in cooperation with industry experts and standardisation bodies from various European countries to ensure that devices meet rigorous safety criteria. EN certification guarantees that products are tested in order to check if they provide maximum protection in case of an accident. All riding helmets are also approved by this same body carry in fact the EN 1384:2023 mark.

Other standards: what are they?
Other airbag devices may bear different standards, such as NF S72-800:2022. This French standard was developed by AFNOR (Association Française de Normalisation). Although it is a national reference, it is not a European certification and therefore does not offer the same guarantees and strictness as EN standards.

The CE mark: what does it mean?
Another certification often found is the CE mark, which, however, only indicates compliance with general European regulations in terms of health and manufacturing processes. It is important to emphasise that this mark does not refer specifically to individual protection for equestrian sports, but rather covers a wide range of consumer products, such as electronic devices or common clothing.

Choosing maximum protection with VEREDUS VITA SAFETY LINE
Choosing the right protection can make the difference between a minor accident and a more serious one. VEREDUS VITA VEST and VITA JACKET, with their dual protection certified by European EN standards, are currently two of the best choices on the market for riders who want to practice equestrian sports in total safety.
